The essay delves into Montale’s article Teatro italiano dell’Ottocento (Italian Theater of the 19th Century) published in “Corriere d’Informazione” on January 2, 1946. Montale, starting from the review of Alda Croce’s work Teatro italiano della seconda metà dell’Ottocento (Italian Theater of the Second Half of the 19th Century) (1940-1945), develops a broad reflection on 19th-century theater. After contextualizing the article, the text is reproduced and analytically commented upon. Then, a reflection on Montale’s modus operandi as a theater critic is developed. Lastly, Montale’s thoughts on prose theater are revisited, with references to other articles published in the “Corriere”. The essay aims to serve as the opening of a research project in this field.
